Insurance rates are too variable to compare one persons price to another’s so don’t waste your time trying to compare apples to oranges. Put that excess energy into calling insurance companies and getting quotes. It’s a painful but necessary evil. And here’s the reason why…..

Things that get factored into determine costs are:

• Zip codes
• Credit score
• Cost of payout
• Driving records
• Full time or not
• Age
• Sex
• Are your driving or pulling your RV?
• Are your bundling your car and RV?
• Coverage limits
• Deductible chosen
• The ‘pool’ you get put into – which is totally out of your control

The best advice is to find a company that provides coverage from multiple insurance companies. They can shop around and get the best available price. If that’s not good, then keep looking. But make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Look at your current policy and make a list of your coverage limits, your deductibles, etc. so that when you get a quote, you can make sure that you are comparing the same coverages.

Miller Insurance Agency was who we used when our current policy went up by $500 for no reason. They were able to save us from that increase. Strangely enough, we ended up with the same company (Progressive) but at a better price. That’s because we got put into a new ‘pool’ – apparently one that didn’t have as many claims as the ‘group’ we were lumped into last time.

It never hurts to check for a better price but do it at least 3 months before your current policy runs out so you have time to research and make a decision.

Update: A reader pointed out that he gave Miller Insurance the zip codes for various locations that he was considering as his domicile address and they gave him separate quotes based on the zip codes for each. Now that’s a great idea!! So before you decide where to domicile get an insurance quote for all your location options. You might be surprised at your savings.
